Governance Consulting and Coaching

Good governance without the overwhelm

Tired of walking the tightrope between operations and governance? Stuck in the weeds? Worried about your liabilities?

You deserve tailored support that respects your time, sharpens your focus, and helps your board function with clarity and purpose.

At Work Better Together, I provide governance training, coaching and practical mentoring to help you create a smooth-running board (with the niggles removed), hold the right conversations and bring on new directors with ease.

Let’s discuss what support would work best for your board.

Governance Healthcheck

Not sure where to start? Most boards begin here.

Get a review of your current governance documents (don't panic, I've seen it all before!) and processes to identify gaps, opportunities and quick wins. You’ll receive a clear overview of your governance health status and tailored advice for where to focus next.

What’s involved:

  • Review of board packs, reporting, committee structures and agendas
  • Paper-based review and conversations with relevant staff
  • Governance vs operations decision alignment check
  • Summary document with high-level insights and actionable steps
  • 2-hour feedback workshop or tailored training session
  • Practical tools provided for implementation
  • Follow-up accountability session (1 month later)

This review is practical, respectful and designed to get you unstuck fast.

Half-day & full-day governance training sessions

These interactive, down-to-earth sessions are ideal for boards wanting to refresh their practice, clarify roles, and reset how they work together. You can choose from pre-designed modules or request tailored training for your specific needs.

Half-day sessions include:

  • Board strengths and dynamics: how are you really working together?
  • Introduction to governance principles and current best practice
  • Clarifying director roles and responsibilities
  • Understanding governance vs operations
  • How to prepare and participate meaningfully in board meetings

Full-day sessions also include:

  • A governance health and safety audit (see below)
  • Focus on director wellbeing
  • Tailored deep dive on vision, strategy or reporting
  • Wrap-up session with key takeaways and board action plan

Included: A 1-hour accountability or mentoring session following the training.

Shorter taster sessions, topic sessions or structured facilitation for specific issues (e.g. strategic planning, difficult decisions) also available.

Governance coaching for Chairs & Board Leaders

As a trained coach and professional supervisor, I support board Chairs, directors and executive leaders to think strategically, reflect on their leadership style, and work through tricky dynamics.

My coaching is especially helpful if you’re:

  • New to the Chair role and want process support
  • Leading a board through change or tension
  • Wanting a confidential, experienced sounding board

Whether you’re stepping into the Chair role or navigating complexity behind the scenes, this is your space to think out loud, test ideas, and lead with intention, not just react to urgency.

Facilitation for Boards & Teams

Sometimes what a group needs most is structured space to think, talk and make progress - together. I offer facilitation services to help boards, leadership teams or working groups clarify complex issues, navigate sensitive topics, and make confident, values-aligned decisions.

I bring a focused presence that keeps the process on track so your team can focus on the content.

  • Create or update your strategic plan.
  • Refresh your values alignment.
  • Facilitate a team culture discussion.
  • Hold an issue-specific meeting.

Build on the foundations

Once you’ve clarified the basics, I offer additional services to deepen your governance practice:

Health & Safety Governance Workshop (2 hours)

  • Key learnings from NZ case law and PCBU obligations
  • Use of the Institute of Directors H&S board self-assessment tool
  • Facilitated reflection and documentation to demonstrate due diligence

Health & Safety Governance Review

  • Work done vs work imagined - how do you know that what is reported at board level is what actually happens in the business?
  • HS&W is reviewed through policy review, site visits and interviews across the organisation, against what is expected or reported to board level
  • Recommendations are made through a governance lens to ensure that both monitoring and verifying activity takes place

Board Evaluation Process

  • Structured assessment of whole board performance
  • Special focus on the Chair and subcommittees
  • Ongoing templates provided for self-review in future years

Strategic Planning Facilitation

  • Guided review of your values, goals and strategic relevance
  • Collaborative framework where content emerges from discussion
  • Final plan writing remains with the CE or Chair, with review support

Why boards choose governance support

With over 20 years’ experience across health, education, not-for-profit and regulatory settings, I bring deep insight and practical support to every board I work with.

Boards trust me to offer strategic, judgement-free advice that meets them where they are and helps them move forward with clarity, focus and confidence.

Questions about governance training & coaching

What is governance mentoring?

There is a difference between coaching (which builds individual reflective practice and supports a person to achieve their goals, which the coach may not themselves be expert in) and mentoring (which assists with building specific skills in which the mentor is experienced themselves, by sharing their knowledge).

I initially offer mentoring in the governance world as I believe that what directors often need is the specific knowledge and skills required to hit the ground running immediately upon your appointment. The legal structure and practice context of the appointment may be different to the world you have built your career in, and the governance role requires a different lens to that of a senior executive.

As you become more comfortable and familiar in the role the mentoring shifts to a coaching approach, where you are guided to uncover your own insights, boosting your motivation and making meaningful and sustainable change more likely. I am a trained neurocoach through the NeuroLeadership Institute (David Rock and colleagues) and tap into how the brain learns and changes to build the mindset and resilience needed to thrive long-term.

What does governance mentoring and coaching look like in practice?

I work with new clients a minimum of 4 times over the first year. I often find that clients want to meet just prior to or following board meetings (depending on their needs) which can increase the frequency.

In the sessions we establish:

  • What brings you to a governance role – what are the motivators for being on a board?
  • The level of knowledge you hold of board governance practice and responsibilities (which is different to internal organisational or clinical governance processes)
  • Your own skill profile in relation to the board role you hold
  • The workplan of the board and what you will be expected to contribute to over the year
  • What strengths you bring to the table
  • What changes do others expect in your performance by the end of your first year
  • what you would personally like to accomplish

We then follow a structured process aligned to the board workplan, so you receive information when you need it, relevant to the decisions being made.

What does governance mentoring look like for experienced directors?

More experienced directors often seek out mentoring when moving to a different sector or entity type, to ensure they are considering the appropriate criteria for decisions. This may be for a limited period of time, or may shift to a coaching approach, where a sounding board is preferred to advice.

Who benefits from governance mentoring?

Mentoring is best for new or emerging directors, who may be technical experts in their own careers, but are new to the world of governance – being on the other side of the board table. This approach is particularly helpful in supporting the shift from an operational perspective to a governance one. If you are a confident and experienced director we would move straight to a coaching approach.

What does governance mentoring not include?

Governance mentoring does not necessarily include access to the mentor’s networks or guarantee a future role on a board. This is why I prefer to work with people once they have secured their first role, so that questions are specific to the board they are on and the nature of the organisational structure. However I am happy to be approached if you are interested in learning more about what a governance role or career may look like, to see if it’s a good fit.

How do I know if our board needs governance training?

If your board meetings feel unclear, unfocused or reactive, or if directors are unsure about their roles, it’s likely time for governance training. Many boards I work with are dealing with blurred lines between governance and operations, inconsistent engagement, or conflict between members. A short training session can restore clarity, improve engagement and set a clear path forward.

Can you help new or first-time board Chairs?

Yes. Coaching new Chairs is one of the most common governance services I provide. Whether you need help running effective meetings, building trust with your CEO, or managing tricky dynamics, I offer tailored, confidential support to help you lead with confidence and stay aligned with best practice.

Do you offer governance training for not-for-profits or community boards?

Absolutely. I work with not-for-profit boards, incorporated societies and values-led organisations across New Zealand. Training is always adapted to your context, with practical, no-jargon guidance and tools that suit your mission, resources and governance structure.
